MEET MARY PICKFORD AND GLORIA SWANSON

Mary Pickford and Gloria Swanson discuss how their careers began and dispel some of the myths surrounding their image. They also share their views on the impact of talking pictures, introduced in the late 1920s, both on their own working lives and the film industry as a whole, reflecting on the magic of the silent-movie era, which began even before Hollywood was established. At the time of this interview, both conducted in London by Robert Gladwell, Gloria Swanson had resumed acting after virtually retiring in 1934. Gloria talks about the movie 'Sunset Boulevard', and of a possible musical of it in London!

FRANKLY SPEAKING: SELF PORTRAIT OF A STAR - BETTE DAVIS

Actor George Coulouris, accompanied by BBC producer Peter Duval Smith, speaks to Bette Davis in an occasionally heated conversation about the actress's career. Davis shares her opinions on what it means to be a star after 30 years in the business and is at great pains to counter Duvall Smith's claim that she uses the same mannerisms in every performance. Films discussed include 'Dark Victory' (1939), 'Juarez' (1939), 'Watch on the Rhine' (1943) and Davis's most recent hit, 'What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?' (1962).

FRED ASTAIRE

In this unedited interview, the legendary dancer talks candidly about his rise to stardom and subsequent position as one of Hollywood's most bankable and influential entertainers. Astaire recalls the many actors with whom he worked and expresses his affection and admiration for regular co-star Ginger Rogers. He also reveals that while his immaculate style was inspired by Edward, Prince of Wales, he was never comfortable in a full dress suit.

This unedited interview is presented as it was originally recorded. Therefore there are changes in the sound levels and there may be some interruptions and interference from background noise. Parts of this interview were used in the 1975 documentary 'The Fred Astaire Story'.

RECORDED: circa 1974   RUN TIME: 78 minutes 30 seconds CD-R DISC
