BUSBY BERKELEY - GOING THROUGH THE ROOF

This fascinating documentary takes an in-depth look at Busby Berkeley's early career as one of Broadway's most fashionable directors in the 1920s, to his increasingly successful movie career in Hollywood in the 1930s and 1940s. Including interviews with former chorus girls, film historians and critics, the programme reveals how Berkeley revolutionised the filming process. Instead of the traditional method of observing from a static standpoint, Berkeley preferred to move the camera itself to actively participate in the action, allowing much more scope to illustrate his characteristically aerial views of dancing figures forming kaleidoscopic patterns. Interspersed throughout with his trademark ensembles - neon violins forming one giant musical instrument here, a line of chorus girls waving huge bananas there - this is confirmation, were it needed, of Busby Berkeley's unique status in the history of cinema.

HOLLYWOOD (ALSO KNOWN AS HOLLYWOOD: A CELEBRATION OF AMERICAN SILENT FILM)

Narrated by James Mason. Made in 1980 and produced by Thames Television. This comprehensive documentary explores the establishment and development of the Hollywood studios and its impact on 1920s culture. The series consists of thirteen one hour episodes, with each episode dealing with a specific aspect of Hollywood history. Hollywood used silent film clips that were sourced from the best available material, shown at their original running speed and with orchestral scores, giving viewers a chance to see what they originally looked and sounded like. The producers recorded the recollections of many of the period's notable artists, and illustrated their interviews with scenes from their various films, as well as production still photographs, and historical photographs of the Los Angeles environs. Subjects such as Rudolph Valentino and Clara Bow were represented by film scenes, but where possible the series made use of contemporary interviews by survivors of the era. Some of these interviews are notable for being among the only filmed interviews given by their subjects.

 AMERICAN MASTERS: TRUMBO

He was Hollywood's greatest screenwriter. His words still resonate today. He defied a committee, he defied the system. They took his honor. They took his freedom. So Dalton Trumbo went to war. But the ending could only be written by him. Through a focus on the life of Dalton Trumbo (1905-1976), this film examines the effects on individuals and families of a congressional pursuit of Hollywood Communists after World War II. Trumbo was one of several writers, directors, and actors who invoked the First Amendment in refusing to answer questions under oath. They were blacklisted and imprisoned. We follow Trumbo to prison, to exile in Mexico with his family, to poverty, to the public shunning of his children, to his writing under others' names, and to an eventual but incomplete vindication. Actors read his letters; his children and friends remember and comment. Contains Archive photos, newsreels and interviews.

CECIL B. DE MILLE:  AMERICAN EPIC        PARTS 1 AND 2

Cecil B. De Mille – American Epic follows the career of one of Hollywood’s original pioneers. A born showman and provocateur, De Mille was one of the first to "give the public what it wanted," and what it wanted were fantastic costumes, over-the-top sets and epic storylines of love and vengeance, all wrapped in a paradoxical combination of forbidden sins and moralistic scolding. One could argue, and most have, that De Mille invented an admixture combination that has served Hollywood well to this day. Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Charlton Heston and Angela Lansbury are some of the many well-known names that appear, while De Mille’s surviving kin also lend insight into his personal and family life. The film moves from his early years, spent working with his brother in the New York theater, through cofounding what would eventually become Paramount Pictures and beyond. His (and by extension, Hollywood’s) greatest hits are covered in detail, from Why Change Your Wife? in 1920 to Madam Satan in 1930, to the later historical and Biblical epics like Cleopatra (1934), Samson and Delilah (1949) and The Ten Commandments (1956). The documentary includes never-before-seen footage of the parting of the Red Sea, which Spielberg declares "the best special-effects sequence of all time."

IRVING THALBERG: PRINCE OF HOLLYWOOD

This TCM original documentary follows Thalberg’s journey from being a sickly young man barely over his teenage years to becoming one of the most important and historic figures in the history of the motion picture industry in Hollywood. Thalberg enabled women to become accomplished screenwriters and had a knack for cultivating acting talent and creating strong character driven vehicles to help them grow in their craft. The documentary sheds an interesting light on a man who truly refused to take screen credit for his behind-the-scenes labors and is perhaps one of the most well known names by those who appreciate film and filmmakers and yet Thalberg never once took credit for directing or writing in any of the projects he was involved with. He was truly like the candle that flickers twice as bright, but lasts half as long. This is an entertaining and even educational documentary for novice film historians that is narrated by Actor Stanley Tucci and was directed by Robert Trachtenberg.
