This is the second season of the ever popular 'Nearest And
Dearest'. By this second batch of episodes, this comedy had become well and
truly established with high figure viewing.
Another five hilarious
episodes here, including more appearances from stars and famous faces such as;
Jack Watling, Ronald Adam, Charles Lloyd-Pack, Bill Dean (Brookside), Peter
Butterworth (Carry Ons) and a young and attractive John Savident (Coronation
Street)
In a couple of these episodes, Jimmy Jewel appears to have
darkened his hair and looks quite attractive in some shots and somewhat younger.
Jimmy Jewel was a marvellous actor - being the opposite of his character role -
being quietly spoken and gentlemanly in real life. A good example of this can be
seen in rare interview footage in a later DVD release included in bonus
material. Madge Hindle has become more settled in her character as 'Lily', and
considering she was playing a part more than forty years older than she was at
the time, makes it an outstanding feat indeed!
As with the first season
(see my review for that) another two episodes ('Wish You Were Here' and 'All You
Wish Yourself') were borrowed to form part of the coming movie spin-off of 1972.

This is the third season of this massive TV comedy from the
60s, and the very first recorded in colour. This set includes seven hilarious
episodes -including the first of the christmas 'specials'.

This was the fourth season of 'Nearest And Dearest', and
the second to be done in colour. This set includes some of the very best
episodes ever - with a second appearance of Julie Goodyear from 'Coronation

the movie spin-off, and for the later series 'Not On Your Nellie'. More seasons
were to follow after the tremendous success of this well-established comedy.

This was the fifth series of the ever popular 'Nearest And
Dearest' comedy, and the longest running which included eight hilarious
episodes! Unfortunately this was marred by the fact that with the exception of

to the infamous strike at ITV that was going on at the time.

This was the sixth and penultimate series of 'Nearest And
Dearest'.
This series kicks off with a cracking episode in the very first
one, and has a couple of other very funny episodes in what is a fairly short
season. One of the funniest being 'The Right Spirit', where Nellie and Eli
attempt to frighten Lily and Walter from out-staying their welcome by pretending
to be ghosts! Some more famous faces turn up here also, including a whole host
from 'Coronation Street'; Maggie Jones, (Blanche) Barbara Young (Doreen) a
surprisingly handsome Malcolm Hebden (Norris) Lynne Carol (Martha Longhurst) and
Fred Feast (Fred Gee) There's also another chance to see a stunning Shirley
Stelfox! (from Emmerdale)
This was also the second DVD set to include
'special' features. Here we are treated to a very rare interview of Hylda Baker
on the famous Russell Harty chat show from 1972 (she seldom gave interviews)
Many will be surprised just how glamorous Hylda was - a true star and at a time
when famous people were not 'cheap' and dressed like ordinary people. The second
treat is the much-loved video of she and Arthur Mullard giving their hilarious
rendition of 'You're The One That I Want' which gave them a chart hit in 1978 at
the height of 'Grease' fame! What good sports they were! This would turn out to
be Hylda Baker's last TV performance before becoming too ill to work - she died
eight years later. 2 DISCS

This sadly, was to be the very last season of this classic
