Composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim refashions a macabre tale into a musical masterwork in this dazzling performance of the 1979 Broadway hit originally staged by Harold Prince. In her Tony-winning role (one of eight the show earned, including Best Musical), Angela Lansbury plays Nellie. George Hearn turns his stage role of twisted Sweeney into an Emmy-winning triumph. *BROADWAY THE GOLDEN AGE - BY THE LEGENDS WHO WERE
THERE
In their own words, and not a moment too soon - 'Broadway' tells the stories
of our theatrical legends, how they came to New York, and how they created this
legendary century in American theatre. This may be the last chance that these
stories may be documented, for unlike film and television, live theatre exists
only in the memories of those who were there watching, or more importantly,
creating this magic. 'Broadway' tells the stories of these legendary performers,
composers and writers while illustrating their tales with amazing, rare,
archival performance footage and these legends' own home movies and photos.

Philharmonic at Lincoln Center for a wildly enthusiastic audience. This
one-night-only performance became a legendary event in Broadway
history--Follies in Concert! The evolution of this unique, historic event
is exclusively captured in this documentary film, from the first rehearsal--just
four days before the show--to the last-second butterflies just before the
curtain rose. This is a rare treasure for all fans of musical theater. Includes

GREY GARDENS: FROM EAST HAMPTON TO BROADWAY
This 50-minute documentary unfolds the creative journey of Albert Maysles'
cult classic, GREY GARDENS - from non-fiction film to spectacularly mounted
Broadway musical. Captured in the 1975 Maysles film, GREY GARDENS, the
indomitable Edith Beale and her daughter Edie, aunt and cousin to Jacqueline
Kennedy Onassis, were revealed to be a most unique and engaging mother daughter
act - inhabiting a folie à deux built upon powerful interdependence, quirky
eccentricity, courage, devotion and love. Their essence and their story soon
catapulted them to cult icon status, an ironic counterpoint to Mrs. Onassis' own
such status, and culminating in the ultimate homage: being portrayed on the
Broadway stage. The documentary will feature behind-the-scenes footage of the
show's rehearsals, performance and insightful interviews with the creators and
cast, as well as a revealing interview with Albert Maysles and relevant insights
from Beale authorities, devotees, cultural commentators, audience and fans.
"Grey Gardens: From East Hampton to Broadway" tells the story of how the Beales
went from cult-film classic to Broadway smash, mainly through the dogged
determination of composer Scott Frankel, who felt a kinship with the women's
utter rejection of the life society had prescribed for them. Everyone had to be
convinced, from lyricist Michael Korie to dramatist Doug Wright, but in the end
the thing was done and what opened as a small off-Broadway musical soon moved to
the Walter Kerr Theatre, where it racked up 10 Tony nominations, three of which
it won."

JEROME ROBBINS: SOMETHING TO DANCE ABOUT
"No other creative figure of the latter twentieth century
was as contradictory as Jerome Robbins, and few were as controversial. He was a
master of the Broadway musical, transforming its possibilities with such works
as West Side Story, Gypsy, and Peter Pan, and was one of the greatest ballet
choreographers this country has ever produced. This first and only documentary
on Robbins features excerpts from his personal journals, archival performance
footage, and never-before-seen rehearsal recordings, as well as interviews with
Robbins himself and over forty witnesses among them Mikhail Baryshnikov; Jacques
d'Amboise; Suzanne Farrell; Arthur Laurents; Peter Martins; Rita Moreno; Austin
Pendleton; Frank Rich; Chita Rivera; Stephen Sondheim; and Robbins Fiddler
collaborators Jerry Bock, Sheldon Harnick, and Joseph Stein. 'Robbins'
remarkable body of work forever redefined dance and musical theater for a
contemporary audience', says Susan Lacy, Creator and Executive Producer of
WNET's AMERICAN MASTERS, a six-time winner of the Emmy Award for Outstanding
Primetime Non-Fiction Series. 'The revival of West Side Story on Broadway this
winter just validates his lasting importance, his lasting impression. We are
thrilled to air this film in tribute to Robbins' genius, celebrating the 90th
anniversary of his birth.' Jerome Robbins: Something to Dance About was directed
and produced by six-time Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Judy Kinberg and written
by best-selling Robbins biographer Amanda Vaill. This film is narrated by Ron
Rifkin (Brothers & Sisters), who performed the roles of both Robbins and his
father in a workshop production of the director/choreographer s theatrical
autobiography, The Poppa Piece."
