*DIVAS ARE
FOREVER
Divas Are Forever, starring Shirley Bassey
live in concert from Antwerp, Belgium during her 1997 tour. The first 60 minutes
is the concert itself, packed with 10 great Bassey standards. She shows her diva
status stunningly with a great dramatic entrance to the strains of "Goldfinger,"
the theme to the James Bond film, which along with "Diamonds Are Forever" pays
tribute to her Bond girl days. From old favorite "'S Wonderful" to "Kiss Me
Honey, Honey" (in which she cha-chas with her mic) to a bawdy, and just a bit
naughty, "Big Spender" from Sweet Charity, Bassey clearly delights her audience.
She closes her concert with a heartfelt "I Who Have Nothing" and a surprising
cover of the Foreigner hit "I Want to Know What Love Is." She exits the stage
and returns to a standing ovation having donned a feathered and glittered duster
over her beautiful evening gown, thrilling her audience with three encore
numbers, "This Is My Life," "I Wish You Love," and "I Am What I Am."
Then, there is more! During the 1997 tour, the
BBC caught some wonderfully candid moments starting with a post-concert party
thrown by close friend Ivana Trump. (There is a surprise on the guest list.) She
chats on the train, prepares for her appearance at the Taj Mahal, works on a
music video with the Propellerheads, attends a dinner party near her home in
Monte Carlo, and prepares for the Antwerp concert you just saw. Also included
are staged interview moments in which you really see into the woman behind the
sometimes-outrageous diva. A thoroughly entertaining program.

DAME SHIRLEY AT
GLASTONBURY
Glastonbury has been described in an
astonishingly diverse number of ways – at any one moment it can be equally
raucous, rousing, erotic, revolting, reassuring and resplendent, but rarely
glamorous. Yet, as the glorious Dame Shirley Bassey ascended the stage to
rapturous applause from a vast audience, the Pyramid Stage became the Hollywood
Bowl, the tattered ponchos tuxedos, the cider champagne, and the mud marble.
Dressed in a pink tassled gown, Dame Shirley got the crowd going with a host of
classic hits including the likes of 'Big Spender', 'Get The Party Started',
James Bond theme 'Goldfinger' and The Doors hit 'Light My Fire'. Also performed
was a medley during the finale, which included 'Kiss Me, Honey, Honey, Kiss
Me'.

DAME SHIRLEY BASSEY... THE GIRL
FROM TIGER BAY
BBC DOCUMENTARY
Alan Yentob gains exclusive access and insight
into the creative world of Dame Shirley. After a triumphant Glastonbury
appearance and a major illness, at 72, Dame Shirley Bassey, one of our greatest
singers, tentatively re-enters the ring to confront her life in song. Some of
the best contemporary songwriters, including Gary Barlow, the Pet Shop Boys,
Manic Street Preachers, Rufus Wainwright, Richard Hawley and KT Tunstall, along
with the famous Bond composer John Barry and lyricist Don Black, have
interpreted her life through song for a new album produced by David Arnold. The
songs frame and explore the myth of Shirley Bassey, the girl from Tiger Bay, and
the voice and the desire are not found wanting! A back story profiling Shirley,
complete with archive of her greatest performances, tells the story of what
makes Dame Shirley Bassey the living legend that she is today.
