AN EVENING WITH FRED ASTAIRE / ANOTHER EVENING WITH FRED ASTAIRE

10/17/58 ~ NBC-TV

Fred Astaire, Barrie Chase, Jonah Jones. "An Evening with Fred Astaire was a one-hour television special starring Fred Astaire, broadcast on NBC on October 17, 1958. It was highly successful, winning nine Emmy awards and spawning three further specials, and technically innovative, as it was the first major television show to be prerecorded on color videotape. It was produced at NBC's Color City studios in Burbank, California. Considered something of a comeback for the then 59-year-old Astaire, the special was his first starring role on television. It was directed and co-produced by Bud Yorkin and introduced Astaire's new partner Barrie Chase, whom he would later describe in Interview magazine in 1973 as perhaps his favorite dance partner.[1] The Jonah Jones Quartet and David Rose and his Orchestra provided the music, and the Hermes Pan Dancers appeared in the ensemble dance numbers. The announcer was Art Gilmore, who at the time was the voice of the Chrysler Corporation, the show's sponsor. Typical for advertising of the era, Chrysler's 1959 model year Forward Look cars featured prominently in the show; Astaire's final words were "I only hope the show is as good as the cars." It’s interesting to note that this is the second-oldest surviving color program to be recorded on videotape; the oldest known color videotape is the May 1958 inauguration of NBC's Washington, D.C. color studios. Restored in 1988 from the best surviving source material by UCLA Film and Television Archive.

THE WHEELTAPPERS AND SHUNTERS SOCIAL CLUB

 Series 1 - 4           4 Discs

The Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club was a British TV variety show made by Granada Television in the mid 1970s. It was set in a fictional working men's club in the North of England and was hosted by comedian Colin Crompton. Also regularly featured was comedian Bernard Manning who also sang most weeks in a surprisingly effective manner. Crompton was frequently the butt of Manning's jokes, unwittingly acting as Manning's stooge.

The show featured acts regularly seen on the Northern club circuits and often acts which were on the last legs of their popularity, like fifties crooner Johnnie Ray. It also gave newer comedians such as Cannon & Ball, The Grumbleweeds and magician Paul Daniels their first TV exposure.

Other artists to appear on the show included Roy Orbison, Howard Keel, Mike Reid, Max Wall, Lonnie Donegan, Lyn Paul, Tessie O'Shea, The Three Degrees, Lena Zavaroni, The Bachelors, Susan Maughan, Buddy Greco, George Roper, Jim Bowen, Nana Mouskouri, Freddie Garrity, Karl Denver, George Melly and John Chilton's Feetwarmers, Joseph Locke, Kathy Kirby, Frank Carson and Terri Rogers.
